Last Saturday saw the WARL Past Players host their annual re-union day at the South Perth Rugby League clubrooms and what a day it was!!
More than a 150 past players and supporters celebrated the Most Outstanding Players in the history of WA Rugby League by honoring those present on the day with commemorative medals and appreciation for their achievements. It was an amazing turnout with 20 of the 61 historical recipients attending.
Over history the Western Australia Rugby League’s Most Outstanding Player award has had three name changes, these were..
1950-1989 – Brice Trophy. Named after Max Brice, one of the founding fathers of Rugby League in WA
1990-1991 – Rothman’s Shield – Naming rights were given to the international cigarette company who were then major sponsor of the WARL. This ceased when cigarette advertising was banned.
1992-Present – Ken Allen Medal– Named after Ken Allen, another founding father of Rugby League in WA and the founder of the Fremantle Rugby League Club. After Ken’s passing, the award is now presented by Ken’s son Kevin Allen.
The commemorative medals were presented by NRLWA General Manager, John Sackson.
